facelıt

Real light, not cut and paste.
As judged by you.

A chatbot guesses your colours from a flat photo. Facelit lights your actual face with real coloured light, and you decide what works with your own eyes. Nothing leaves your device.

Set up
  1. 01Keep some soft, ordinary light in the room, such as daylight from a window or a lamp behind your screen. In a fully dark room the screen floods your face with colour and exaggerates everything; with gentle room light you see the colour’s real effect, as you would in a draping session.
  2. 02Turn your screen brightness all the way up. On a Mac, turn off Night Shift and True Tone; on Windows, turn off Night light.
  3. 03Sit an arm's length away, facing the screen, with your face centred in the camera.
  4. 04Rest your gaze on the dot at the top of the screen, just below your camera, whenever photos are being taken. It keeps your eyes open and looking into the lens. If your webcam isn't at the top centre, look at the camera itself.
  5. 05Bare face if you can. Wear white or grey, or pull a grey towel around your shoulders.
  1. 01Use Safari on iPhone or Chrome on Android, and allow the camera when asked.
  2. 02Turn your brightness all the way up. Turn off auto-brightness, Night Shift or night light, True Tone, and Low Power Mode, which all change or dim the screen.
  3. 03Prop your phone upright at eye level, about a forearm's length away (30 to 40 cm). A stack of books works. Your face should fill the oval, and your hands stay free to tap.
  4. 04A phone is a small light, so keep the room softly lit but not bright. The light check will tell you if the balance is right.
  5. 05When photos are being taken, look at the dot at the top of the screen, just under your front camera.
  6. 06Bare face if you can. Wear white or grey, or put a grey towel around your shoulders.

Facelit flashes full-screen colours about once a second. If you're sensitive to flashing light, choose Gentle, or use live view instead, where colours only change when you tap or click.

How it works

Guided test works like an eye test: about 25 quick "this one or that one?" pairs. Warmth first, because it splits the colour seasons in half; then depth, clarity and contrast. Each answer chooses the next pair. Start here.

Live view puts you in the middle of a colour, so its light falls on your face while you watch.

Flash all colours runs 30 colours and snaps a photo under each. Then you compare yourself side by side, lit by real coloured light, and rate each one.

Photos stay on this device. Nothing is uploaded.
